A grid-connected charging project can take 12 to 24 months to design, permit, and fully bring online. Electric vehicle orders sometimes arrive before that work is done. Microgrid providers serve a critical role, supplying on-site power and charging to keep vehicles in service and deployment timelines on track.
Microgrid providers bring mobile or modular equipment to your site that generates or stores the electricity your fleet needs to charge. Some rely on battery storage, others on fuel-powered generators, and many use both. The exact setup differs by provider.
If your site already has electrical service, most systems can use it alongside their own equipment. If not, they can run without a grid connection. Your fleet schedule, charging demand, and how long you want service all influence which provider fits best.

SparkCharge
SparkCharge centers fleet charging on Battery Energy Storage, which banks off-peak energy and dispatches high-power charging without a grid upgrade. PowerHub Generation can be added for fully off-grid depots or sites that need continuous output, pairing with storage when more power is needed. Systems can run without a grid connection or tie into available grid power where it helps.
SparkCharge offers Charging-as-a-Service, outright purchase, and rent or lease. Through CaaS, they deploy, own, and operate the equipment with no upfront cost, and customers pay per kWh delivered, similar to a utility bill. Purchase and lease options are available for fleets that want to own or finance the equipment directly.
SparkCharge says most deployments go live in as little as seven days. Their systems are modular and scale as the fleet grows, without a new capital project or grid upgrade.
L-Charge
L-Charge delivers ultra-fast, grid-free Level 3 DC charging through mobile charging trailers. Each trailer combines onboard generation, battery storage, and charging equipment in one unit, built to operate without a grid connection and deliver up to 180 kW.
L-Charge offers Charging-as-a-Service with zero upfront cost and pay-per-kWh pricing. Charging infrastructure, fuel, maintenance, remote monitoring, and fleet management software are included, with no hardware purchase required.
Natural gas, CNG, RNG, and hydrogen-ready fuel options are available. L-Charge says trailers can be deployed in weeks rather than the months or years grid upgrades often require, and relocated as fleet demand or routes change.
Volt Vault
U.S. Energy's Volt Vault generates electricity on-site to power fleet charging in containerized and trailer-mounted systems. Classic, Flex, and Lite units run on natural gas, CNG, RNG, or propane and operate without depending on the electrical grid.
Volt Vault is available to purchase, lease, finance, or use as Charging-as-a-Service. U.S. Energy also offers short-term rentals for fleets that need flexible deployment without a long-term commitment.
Configurations include Classic for overnight Level 2 or fast Level 3 charging, Flex for mixed fleets, and a towable Lite model. U.S. Energy says units can be on-site and ready to charge in about four months, including manufacturing, commissioning, and permitting.
